DESIGNERS: BATCH PRODUCTION

“Batch production involves the production of identical products made in groups (batches). The group remains together as it passes through each stage of production until all processes are complete.”

Batch production is step by step (as compared to mass production where different processes happen simultaneously). Because of this, there is a ‘downtime’ where the equipment is readied/reconfigured for the next batch. Batches in this form of production are often unique, and can range from a very small number such as 10 to a few thousand pieces.

I love how quirky Milkii jug is- its two heads give it a very playful feel. As a design choice, I think that the two heads are more for the feel/sentimental value than a functional choice. As a child, and even now, I would definitely have a lot more fun using this jug.

The egg cube is the perfect example for sleek design. Rather than just holding an egg, the ‘cube’ supports a spoon. This elevates the egg by making it a complete meal- there is no need to get a spoon and keep it on a plate- this is all there needs to be. In that sense, this could also be seen as a slightly minimalistic piece. What really drew me to the design was its simplicity- just one material in one piece of production. I feel that this simplicity is what gives it its elegance.

Glass

Molo: Float Tea Lantern, Soft Chair

Design Studio Molo’s process involves working with craftsmen to make produce designs. Molo has a multidisciplinary background, which helps with developing products in innovative ways.

Made of borosilicate glass, the floating tea lantern set is a beautiful fusion of elegance and functionality. The almost ‘suspended’ bowl in which the tea is poured keeps the tea insulated, removing the need for a handle. The form is therefore simple and symmetrical. I want to draw from this perfect balance and keep in mind that my products should be both function-oriented and aesthetically pleasing.

Part of Molo’s expandable/compressible furniture, the soft chair is made of paper, and rather than deteriorating over time, it maintains its structure. In fact, the paper becomes softer and more ‘beautiful’ with use. This is a very good example of sustainability, which I am very interested in.
